Porbandar This place is known to be the smallest district of Gujarat state. This is the place where Mahatma Gandhi was born. “The land of credits that bears a great person as like the womb to this nation and brought out this child of revolution, courage and victory”. Porbandar was previously known as ‘Pauravelakul’ and then ‘Sudamapuri’ during the 10th century periods. Today, this small area of 2,286 sq.km is known as Porbandar, the land so fertile, the average rainfall is 800mm. the climate is so friendly to agriculture , therefore, cotton, groundnut, bajra, gram, wheat and jowar are the flourishing crops in this region, the major river are Ozat, Maghal and Bhadar. The two major industries are cement and soda-ash industry. The other places of interest are Kriti Mandir, Nehru Planetarium and Bharat Mandir. Even this place has its historical evidences to be very ancient, to the ages of Puranas. It is mentioned in the great Indian epic “Mahabharta” as ‘Sudamapuri’. The name Porbandar is the combination of two words,’Porai’ aand Bandar’ which means Port. Related to its meaning this spot was once a great trade of maritime experiences during the reign of Mughals. Provided this town is also called as the “white City” for its white stone constructions. This place is blessed with nature and scenery scenario everywhere, its beaches, grasslands, hills, and lakes are the spots of enchanment to the tourist from all over the country. Being old in age, this town is known to be the last capital of Jethwa Rajput Kingdom. Later during the Rana Sartanji again established the present porbandar as the capital of his Kingdom during the year 1785. This place came unique and familiar to the world because of Mahatma Gandhi was born here, but then when British were ruling, this place gained the civic aspects. The town stands outstanding for its town planning, stone buildings, ashlar masonry and rich carving works. The temples, mosques, are the beauties of this town that edifies serenity and the marine drive adds great charm to this coastal queen land. Kriti Mandir, Nehru Planetarium, Bharat Mandir, Huzoor Palace, Daria Rajmahal, Morvi and Victoria Jubliee Madrassa, Gondal , Kuchdi, Ghumli, Gope and Barda hills provides a great trip of beauty and joy together. Porbandar is a heaven on earth for the birds of the air and the bird watchers, flamingos and other migratory birds are found here at this coastal region. The best seasons are November to March. Barda Hills From Porbandar you need take 30 min drive to reach here, Mount Venu is considered to be the highest peak of Barda Hills , measuring 2,057 ft high . It is that one can have a panoramic view of Khambala Dam from here. Barda Wildlife Sanctuary This is a lush green woods spread over at an area of 190 sq.km, this sanctuary area is a green oasis, agriculture land , wasteland, and yet known to be as dense forest. The two main rivers that trespass by this sanctuary are Bileshvary and Joghri. The place Khamdala and Fodara are the important dams. This region of thick flora and fauna is a spotted area for leopards, wolf, wild boar, crocodile, chameleon, panther, spotted deer, samba deer, neelgai and monkeys, spotted eagles crested hawk eagle and more are the endangered living things here. Kileshwar a temple and camping site is in the middle of the sanctuary for the sake of nature and wildlife lovers. The best seasons are November to March. Kutiyana This town was once under the reign of Junagadh Nawabs and was known as a rich trading spot for the Memon community, but before independence. This location is on the banks of Bhadar River, the buildings structure explores the style and taste of memon Muslims. The town is a planned prime spot to trade, the central bazaar street leads to an awesome decorated mosque with high minarets and an impressive façade. The major attraction here is Miskinsha pir a main spot of Mislim pilgrims. Urs festival is famous here; it takes place on the 13th, 14th, 15th day of Hijri month of Sabaan, which swans in thousands of devotees from various parts of the country. Madhavpur This town is located on the coastal region of the Arabian Sea, the sandy beaches welcomes many. The town is familiar through Hindu religions text, it is said that in this place that Krichna had married Rukmini, therefore, the famous fest of Mer community called Chaitra Sud 12 is celebrated every year, the Haveli temple of Madhavraiji and Madhavpur beach are the main attractions. The Javeli temple of Madhavraiji is another attraction, the Bethak of Mahaprabuji as Shri Vallabhachrya who had given discourse on Shrimad Bhagwat for seven days is also situated here. Porbandar Bird Sanctuary This sanctuary is the smallest birds nest in Gujarat state, which covers an area of 9 hectares. The fresh water lake and the lush green plants makes home to variety of migratory and resident birds like wild fowls, flamingos, ibis, teals and curlews. The best season for visit is October to March.
